DENOMINATION
It is the normal denomination of ceramic tiles with low or medium-low water absorption that are moulded by extrusion and are generally not glazed.
APPEARANCE

The body is an ochre to very dark red colour, with a heterogeneous grain and often the non-homogeneous elements can be distinguished with the naked eye (grain, inclusions, pores). The predominant shapes and sizes are squares and rectangles, although there are hexagons, octagons and a wide variety of complementary tiles (mouldings, coves, beads, strips, wads, ...) and special tiles (steps, footrails, drip plates, ...). The thickness of the tiles greatly varies depending on their size and type and is usually greater than that of stoneware floor tiles.

USE
Their particular characteristics make them specially ideal for different uses: façade facing, exterior paving including in public areas, floors of public buildings, industrial floors, etc. Their finish with moderate irregularities on the surface, arrises and colour allow them to be used in decoration.
  PRODUCTION IN SPAIN
Within the relatively small production in Spain, there is a wide variety of types
  TYPES

This group includes:

  • Tiles denominated "quarry tiles" due to their similarity to traditional extruded English tiles.
  • Double separable tiles also known by the German name of "Spaltplatten".
They are moulded by simultaneous extrusion of two tiles joined by the strias on the back, and they are separated after firing by means of a dry blow that leaves the strias with a distinctive profile of the breakage. The long sides of the face may be slightly depressed, so as to protect the arrises.
  • "Salt glaze" tiles, on whose face common salt is applied during firing, which gives the tiles a shiny uneven bronze film that has a decorative effect. They may even be used for exterior facing, but they have low abrasion resistance, which means they are easily worn if used on floors, even if these do not have much transit.

Note: This denomination is used less frequently to refer to tiles that are dry pressed with low to medium-low water absorption, for which reason it is convenient to make sure beforehand.

  CLASIFICATION STANDARDS
These tiles are chiefly included in the AI group (Extruded ceramic tiles with E < 3% water absorption) or the AIIa group (Extruded ceramic tiles with 3%< E < 6%, 1st part water absorption) of the ISO 13006 and UNE EN 14411 standards.
