DENOMINATION |
 |
It is the traditional denomination
of ceramic tiles that generally have medium-high to high
or even very high water absorption, are moulded by extrusion,
are generally unglazed and therefore only undergo a single
firing. |
 |
APPEARANCE |
|
The unglazed Catalonian floor tile is red or dark red,
which is the typical colour of burnt clay. A small part
of the tiles produced are glazed with a red or green
transparent vitreous coating (vitrified tiles). The
body is made of heterogeneous grain and it is often
easy to distinguish the non-homogeneous elements with
the naked eye (grains, inclusions, pores). The predominant
shapes and sizes are squares and rectangles, but there
are many others: hexagons, regular octagons and oblongs
and tiles with curvilinear sides. There is a wide range
of complementary tiles (mouldings, coves, beads, strips,
wads, ...) and especially steps, footrails and drip
plates.
|
|
USE |
|
It is traditionally used
along the Mediterranean coast to pave terraces, balconies
and verandas and is frequently used in combination with
olambrillas; vitrified tiles are used in this area on
kitchen benches in rural environments. |

PRODUCTION IN SPAIN |
| |
Production and consumption
are stable or with a downward trend. |
| |
CLASSIFICATION STANDARD |
| |
These tiles are chiefly
included in the Allb group (Extruded ceramic tiles with
6% < E < 10% water absorption, 1st or 2nd part)
and the Alll group (Extruded ceramic tiles with E >
10% water absorption) of the ISO 13006 and UNE EN 14411. |
